PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation has proposed to construct three new flyovers to ease traffic congestion at crucial junctions in the city.
The busy sections where the new flyovers are likely to come up include the junction near Bund Garden; RTO chowk and one on the Pune-Mumbai road, near the engineering college junction.
The flyover at Bund Garden will be in the direction of Gunjan theatre and will be 1.5-km long.

The flyovers near RTO and Engineering college chowk will have a length of 250 metres each.
According to the findings of PMC’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) cell, the flyovers have become necessary in view of the increasing traffic congestion at the three junctions.
Speaking to TOI, Vinay Deshpande, member, JNNURM cell, said the new flyovers will be constructed under the JNNURM projects and that the tentative drawings and estimates had been sent to the urban development ministry. “The detailed drawings are being prepared by Infrastructure Leasing and Finance Services (IL&FS), the consultants for the project,” Deshpande said.
He said the cost of the projects will be revealed only after the detailed drawings are ready and the ministry approves the proposal. The decision to build the flyovers was taken after a project report on road network was prepared in view of the Commonwealth Youth Games. "Right now, we are concentrating on finalising the drawings, but we are also looking at measures to avoid delays during construction. We will consider appointing better implementing agencies," Deshpande said. JNNURM projects of around Rs 1,481 crore have been approved for the PMC until now, out of the total Rs 7,000 crore to be received over a period of seven years. The Rs 1,481 crore budget includes Rs 286 crore for road projects, including flyovers.
Meanwhile, elected members have sought recommendation of the civic administration to construct underground subways at Nal stop (Abhinav chowk) and Jehangir hospital junction. The municipal administration has upheld the need for subways at the two junctions because of heavy vehicular traffic, but have stressed the need for reviewing of other road and bridge-widening works going on near the junctions.
